Toukokuun alkua Cadizin vaiheilla VII

Ratsastaa voi hevosellakin, tuumii lehmähaikara

Tuli jo neljästoista toukokuuta, matka oli hiljalleen päättymässä. Piti käyttää loppuaika mahdollisimman hyödyllisesti. Eniten oli jäänyt näkemättä pohjoisessa, Donanan etelälaidalla ja sinne lähdimme vielä kerran. Muuten, jopa autovuokraamon virkailija oli suositellut meille käyntiä tuolla kun sanoimme että lintuja etsisimme. Tulimme sinne taas kuten viimeksikin kurvaten tielle CA 9027, ja pysähdyimme lyhyesti Sanlucarin viereen golfkentän altaille. Yöhaikarat olivat edelleen paikalla, peräti kolmisenkymmentä niitä nyt oli, samoin viitisentoista lehmähaikaraa jotka viihtyivät osaksi viereisen niityn hevosten joukossa. Seija osasi varmaan hevoskuiskauksen alkeet espanjaksikin koskapa lauman johtava kellokastamma halusi välttämättä tuoda joukkonsa meidän luoksemme. Välissä oli parin metrin levyinen jyrkkäreunainen oja minkä ylitys oli kuitenkin tuolle johtajalle liikaa, häntäänsä huiskien se jäi turhautuneena omalle puolelleen ojaa.

Tämä halusi mukaamme mutta vallihauta erotti meidät.

Lammen vaiheilla viihtyi myös harmaa- ja silkkihaikara sekä kolme kattohaikaraa ja saman verran pronssi-iibiksiä. Muut linnut olivat lyhyen katselun perusteella samoja kuin ennenkin. Jatkoimme seuraavaksi Laguna de Tarelon laidalle. Lyhyesti katsoimme senkin lintuja, kolme punapäänarskua oli viidentoista punasotkan seurana, merihanhia oli nyt pari paikalla, valkopääsorsia kuusi. Kapustahaikaroita oli kahdeksan, pronssi-iibiksiä kuusi, lehmähaikaroita viisi, yksi silkkihaikara ja kahdeksan flamingoa lammen takaosassa. Harjalintu huhuili jossakin lähipuissa, pikkukuovi vähän kauempana. Viiden pikku-uikun lisänä selällä ui kolme mustakaulauikkua.

Mutta sehän on ihan ruskea...

Näitä lintuja emme kuitenkaan etsineet vaan jotakin näkemättä jäänyttä. Sellaista lähdimme etsimään Salina de los Portugueses'n altailta. Me jätimme auton lähelle altaille johtavan tien alkupäätä. Muut tuntuivat ajavan autoineen perille asti. Yksi pariskunta jopa ihmetteli, oliko autossamme jotakin vikaa ja tarvitsimmeko kenties apua. Sanoin vain että me pidämme kävelystä ja mitään hätää ei ole. Päätään puistellen jatkoivat sitten matkaa, niin mekin.

Kun saavuimme parin kilometrin kävelyn jälkeen altaille, huomasimme kaukana penkalla lintuja tarkkailemassa pikku kojun vieressä aurinkovarjon alla jonkun kaljupäisen kaverin. Vähän myöhemmin huomasimme hänen lähtevän moottoripyörällä jonnekin Algaidan kylän suuntaan, jättäen vahdiksi tukikohtaansa schäferin. Lintuja oli altailla tarkkailtavaksi, me näimme reuna-altailla jo noin 250 flamingoa, 21 kaitanokkalokkia tuli altaille joen puolelta. Silkkihaikaroita oli parikymmentä, harmaa- ja kattohaikaroita pari kumpaakin ja jo ennen altaita oli polun läheltä ojanvarresta noussut ilmaan ruskohaikara. Sen tosin tunsin vasta kun katsoin siitä ottamaani kuvaa. Pronssi-iibiksiä lensi täälläkin ylitsemme parikymmentä, kapustahaikaroita ruokaili altailla ja lammikoilla viitisentoista.

Kahlaajia oli täällä enemmän kuin vähään aikaan olimme nähneet, helteestä huolimatta ainakin 250 tylliä ja 80 suosirriä, joukossa viisi tundrakurmitsaa ja pari punajalkavikloa. Pari pääskykahlaajaa lensi kuivan niityn yllä. Pitkäjalkoja oli vain viitisen yksilöä. Enemmän olisi varmaan näkynyt jos olisimme kunnolla lähteneet komppaamaan myös niitä altaita joihin asti ei tuolta polulta suoraan nähnyt. Sää oli kuitenkin sen verran helteinen ettei mieli sinne tehnyt lähteä. Kuivan polunvarsiniityn seuraaminen tuotti kuitenkin havainnot lyhytvarvaskiuruista ja pikkukiuruista sekä parista pikkupensaskertusta. Kolmisenkymmentä lajia näimme noilla altailla käyntimme aikaan.

Lähdimme takaisin päin taas Trebujenan tien kautta. Alkupään altaat olivat kalanviljelykäytössä ja suojattu verkoin rosvoilevilta linnuilta. Kun jokivarren tie kääntyi kohti Trebujenaa, vieressä oli ilmeisesti taas altaita, niillä kohtalaisesti vettä ja nokikanaparven lisänä yllättävästi vesilintupari jonka jo auton ikkunasta tunnistin saman tien marmorisorsiksi. Kuvaamaan en heti niitä päässyt, tie oli kapea ja vastaan tuli juuri iso auto perässä hevoskärry, ja kun se oli ohi mennyt, pariskunta oli uinut ruoikon suojaan. Muutama liejukana siinä piti minulle ääntä, pari pronssi-iibistä meni yli, samoin pääskykahlaaja. Ehkä oli paikattu nyt tarpeeksi, siinä oli jo päivän kolmas elämänpinna.

Illalla kävimme vielä kerran hotellin lähellä Punta Canteran linnoituksen valleilla. Punapyyt olivat edelleen aktiivisina paikalla, sama laji oli tullut vastaan jo päivän matkalla. Seuraava viidennentoista päivän aamu olikin sitten viimeisemme San Fernandossa. Pakkasimme tavarat autoon ja luovutettuamme avaimen lähdimme ajamaan kohti Malagaa yhdentoista aikaan. Mitään kiirettä meillä ei ollut, auto piti luovuttaa ennen iltakymmentä. Liian aikaisinkaan ei kannattanut paikalle mennä koska lentoa Suomeen joutui kuitenkin odottamaan vielä seuraavan vuorokauden puolelle.

Cadizin lahdella aamulla olimme huomanneet viisitoista kapustahaikaraa ja seitsemän silkkihaikaraa. Matkamme kotiin alkoi ajamalla viitostietä kohti kaakkoa. Ensimmäisen mutkan matkaan teimme taas ajamalla Alcala de los Gazules'n läpi. Sieltä laskeuduimme jälleen Barbaten patoaltaan laidalle. Kävimme el Aljiben opastuskeskuksen ovella puolelta päivin mutta ovi oli kiinni. Kävelimme hieman lähiteillä.Opastuskeskuksen takana oli laitumella nautoja ja niiden seurana lehmähaikaroita. Kävelimme hiekkatietä mäen päälle, aidan vieressä pensaikossa liikkui joku eläin ja huomasimme erään vasikan tulleen aidan raosta väärälle puolelle. Se ei enää löytänyt tuloaukkoaan ja odotteli apua aidan toisella puolella olevalta emoltaan.

Tienvarressa näkyvimpiä olivat mustapäätaskut sekä harmaasirkut joilla oli jo isot poikaset. Korkealla lensi taas hanhikorppikotka ja haarahaukka, alempana muun muassa ruostepääsky. Tiellä opastuskeskuksen kohdalla oli kolme yliajettua lintua, ne näyttivät kahdelta haarapääskyltä ja kolmas oli ruostepääsky, laskeutuminen tielle oli ollut kohtalokasta.

Jatkoimme matkaa edelleen ja mieli teki pysähtyä vielä johonkin sopivaan paikkaan. Lähellä olikin seuraava allas, Embalse de Charco Redondo ja sen vierestä lähti retkipolku Sendero el Palancar. Tuota lähdimme tarkastamaan. Heti alkumatkasta lähipuista nousi ilmaan iso peto, joka määrittyi lopulta käärmekotkaksi. Ylemmäs mäelle käveltyämme taivaalle tuli parikymmentä hanhikorppikotkaa. Metsässä lauloi runsaasti keltahemppoja, mutta pääosa lajeista oli meikäläisittäin tutun oloisia, mustarastaita, punarintoja, mustapääkerttuja, peippoja, tali- ja sinitiaisia, tiklejä, vihervarpusia ja peukaloinen. Vuoriuunilintuja kuului laulavan, samoin iberiantiltaltteja ja pari tulipäähippiäistä. Närhikin huuteli ensin ja näkyikin sitten. Töyhtötiainen tirritteli ja käpytikka nousi metsästä lentoon.

Reitti oli aika pitkä ja täyttä kierrosta emme tehneet, olisi kai pitänyt. Ehkä tulemme tuonne vielä uudestaan. Me jatkoimme matkaa ensin Los Barrioksen ohi ja sieltä kohti Malagaa. Lintuja tuolla pitkällä loppusuoralla näkyi enää vähän, kattohaikaroita vähän väliä, muutama hanhikorppikotka ja kolme haarahaukkaa.

Ehdimme Malagaan ennen iltakuutta joten oli hyvää aikaa käväistä viimekeväisellä retkikohteella Guadalhorcen suistossa. Auton jätimme läheisen koulun viereen, siellä oli lasten urheiluharjoituksia ja muitakin autoja siten kadun varressa. Turkinkyyhkyjä oli pitkin katujen varsia. Itse suiston poluilla paljastui että muistot olivat kullanneet paikkaa vahvasti. Verrattuna nyt käytyihin paikkoihin lintuja oli sentään aika vaatimattomasti. Viime vuoteen verrattuna uusia olivat 12 flamingoa ja paikallisina oli myös kahdeksan kaitanokkalokkia sekä viisitoista välimerenlokkia kun viime vuonna jouduin tyytymään jälkikäteen kuvista löydettyihin pariin yksilöön. Kahlaajia oli viimevuotista vähemmän, toki nyt oli helle, vuotta aiemmin oli ollut epävakaista ja sateistakin. Pari riuttatiiraa lensi yli merelle, neljä valkoposkitiiraa lepäili altailla. Valkopääsorsia oli kahdeksan ja viime vuoteen verrattuna uusia ristisorsia neljä. Paikalla näimme sentään 33 lajia eli ihan saman tason tuloksen kuin noilla kohderetkillämme.

Guadalhorcen suiston flamingoja

Käynnin jälkeen ajoimmekin sitten suoraan autovuokraamoon, tai rehellisesti sanoen aikamoisen kiertelyn jälkeen löysimme sinne reitin. Luovutuksen jälkeen vaelsimme lentoaseman yläkertaan missä saimme odottaa lentoa kotiin kello aamuyhteen saakka. Helsinki-Vantaan lentokentällä olimme kuudennentoista päivän aamulla varttia vaille seitsemän ja kotona sitten puoli kahdeksan maissa.

Already on May 14th, the journey was slowly coming to an end. We had to use the remaining time as useful as possible. Most opportunities had been missed in the north, south of Donana, and we went there once more. Indeed, even a car hire officer had recommended us to visit there when we said that we were looking for birds. We arrived there again, like last time, heading to CA 9027, and we stopped briefly next to the Sanlucar golf course pools. Night Herons were still there, as many as thirty of them were now, as well as fifteen Cattle Egrets, they followed the adjacent meadow horses. Seija probably knew the methods of horse whispering in Spanish also, as the herd's leading bell-bearing mare wanted to bring her troops to us.There was between us a two-meter-wide steeply banked ditch, so the overrun was too much for that leader. Frustratedly she whipped its tail and turned us her back.

In the Martin Miguel ponds Grey Heron and Little Egret were present, as well as three White Storks and the same amount of Glossy ibises. The other birds were the same as on our previous visit. We continued on the edge of Laguna de Tarelo. Briefly, we looked at birds, three Red-crested Pochards were with fifteen Pochards, there was now a pair of Greylag Geese and six White-headed Ducks. There were eight Spoonbills, six Glossy ibises, five Cattle Egrets, one Little Egret and eight Flamingos at the opposite side of the pond. The Hoopoe was hooting a little bit further away. In addition to five Little Grebes, three Black-necked Grebes swam on the rear of the pond.

However, we did not seek these birds but something not yet seen. That's why we went to find the Salina de los Portugueses. We left the car near the beginning of the road leading to the pools. Others seemed to drive futher to the end with their cars. One couple even wondered if there was something wrong with our car and did we need any help. I just said that we like walking and there is no problem. They continued their journey wondering and shaking their heads, we as well.

When we arrived at the pools after a couple of kilometers of walking, we noticed far on the bank of the pond under a large umbrella a bald-headed man watching the birds and sitting on a folding chair next to a little hut. A little later we noticed that he was leaving on the motorcycle somewhere in the direction of Algaida village, leaving his base guarded by an alsatian dog. The birds had to be observed in the pools, we saw about 250 Flamingos on the pools by the river, 21 Slender-billed Gulls came to the pools from the river. There were twenty Little Egrets, a pair of Grey Herons and White Storks, and even before the ponds there was a Purple Heron rising in the air near from a ditch near the river. I identified it when I looked at the picture on the camera screen. Glossy Ibis flew here even more than a dozen, fifteen Spoonbills waded in the pools searching food.

There were more waders here than for a while we had seen, although it was hot, at least 250 Ringed Plovers and 80 Dunlins, among them five Grey Plovers and a pair of Common Redshank. A couple of Collared Practincoles were flying over a dry meadow. Black-winged Stilts were scarce here, no more than five birds. More would probably have been seen if we had properly studied also the ponds which were further away, but the weather was so hot that we decided not to go there. However, keeping eye on dry vegetation along the path, there were some Short-toed Larks, Greater as well as Lesser, and a couple of Spectacled Warbler males. Thirty species we saw at those pools during our visit.

We went back again through the Trebujena road. The basin pools were used for fish farming and protected by nets from robbing birds. When the riverside road turned towards Trebujena, there were apparently a couple of pools, with moderate water and a surprisingly waterbird pair which I immediately recognized as Marbled Ducks through the car window. I tried to photograph them immediately, the road was narrow, and the big car just came across pulling a horse cart, and when it had passed us, the couple swam in the bulrush vegetation. A few Moorhen in it gave me a voice, a couple of Glossy Ibises went over, as did a Collared Prctincole. Maybe it was just enough to be patched, I had three new lifers  already.

In the evening, we once again visited the Punta Cantera Castle walls nearby. The Red-legged Partridges were still active, the same species we had seen flying over the road earlier today. The next morning was the last one for us in San Fernando. We packed our equipments in the car and, after giving up the key, we started driving towards Malaga at eleven. We had no hurry, the car was supposed to be handed over before the 10 p.m.. Too soon it was not advisable to go there because the flight to Finland we had to wait for the next day.

In the morning at Cadiz Bay, we had noticed fifteen Spoonbills and seven Little Egrets. Our journey to home started by moving to the south-east on E5. We made the first bend again by driving through Alcala de los Gazules. From there we descended again at the reservoir of Barbate. We walked to the door of the El Aljibi Visitors' Center at noon, but the door was closed. Behind the visitors' center there were cows in the pasture. We walked on a sandy road to the hill, in the bushes next to the fence was an animal moving, and we noticed a calf having come out of the gap of the fence. It could no longer find that gap and waited for help from its mother on the other side of the fence.

The most visible on the roadside were the Stonechats and Corn Buntings that already had big chicks. The Griffon vulture and the Black Kite were flying high again, below, among other birds, the Red-rumped Swallow. On the way next to the Visitors' Center, there were three overrun birds, they looked like two Barn Swallows, and the third was a Red-rumped, the landing had been fatal.

We continued our journey further and looking for a stop to another convenient location. The next reservoir, Embalse de Charco Redondo, was close by, and there was a hiking path Sendero el Palancar. That we went to check. Immediately at the start, a big bird of prey rose into the air, which eventually became identified as Short-toed Eagle. As walking up the hill, twenty Griffon Vultures came into the sky. In the woods, there were plenty of Serins singing, but most of the species were familiar, Blackbirds, Robins, Blackcaps, Chaffinches, Great and Blue Tits, Goldfinches, Siskins and Wrens. Odd birds were singing, as were Iberian Chiffchaffs and a couple of Firecrest. A Jay alarmed first and then flew over. Crested Tit kept calling and Great Spotted Woodpecker rose from the forest to flight.

The route was pretty long and we didn't do a full circle although we should have done it. Maybe we will come back again. We continued our journey past Los Barrios and then towards Malaga. There were few birds in that long A7/CA7-stage, every now and then White Storks, a few Griffons and three Black Kites.

We made our way to Malaga before the evening so it was a good time to visit the year-ago-site in the Guadalhorce estuary. We left the car next to the nearby school, there were children's sports exercises and other cars also on the street. Collared doves were hooting along the streets. The paths of the estuary itself revealed that the memories had a strong golden facings. However, compared to the places we had visited now, the birds were rather modest. Compared to last year, 12 Flamingos were new and eight Slender-billed Gulls were also, last year I had to settle for a couple of individuals discovered later in the photographs. There were fewer waders than last year, of course, now it was hot, a year earlier weather was unstable and rainy. A couple of Sandwich Terns flew over to the sea, four Whiskered Terns were resting on ponds. As new compared to last year, there were four Shelducks. At the time, we saw 33 species, that is, the same level of performance as those of our target journeys.

After the visit, we drove straight to the rental house, or, to be honest, after a great twist we found a route there. After the delivery we went upstairs to the airport where we could wait for a flight home until 1 a.m.. To Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, we arrived at a quarter to seven in the morning and then at home we were in half-eight.
